Museum Research Service

The Archival holdings of The Royal Hampshire Regiment, which are housed at Serle’s House, include the collections of the Royal Hampshire Regiment (post 1946), The Hampshire Regiment (1881-1946), the 37th and 67th Foot Regiments and the Hampshire Yeomanry.

Access to the Archive is on an appointment only basis and we would ask that at least one weeks notice is given. Items in our archive can be studied under supervision. The fee for this will be on a discretionary basis.

We hold copies of the World War I War Diaries for all Battalions, copies of the four volumes of Regimental History and of the First World War Medal Rolls. We also hold copies of the Hampshire Regimental Journal from 1905-1992.

Please note The Hampshire Record Office holds the Archives of the County’s Militia:

Research

We aim to provide a professional, friendly and helpful research service to former members of the Regiment, relatives, researchers and interested parties.

This can include questions regarding individuals, battles, casualties, Regimental History, etc. However, we do not hold the Service Records of individual soldiers. These are kept either at the National Archives at Kew or by the Army at the Army Personnel Centre, Glasgow.

We are only able to answer enquiries relating to soldiers who have served in the Regiment. For details of other Regimental Museums please see the Army Museums Ogilby Trust website:

Research Charges

It is very much regretted that in order to cover our own expenses, we will have to start charging for research enquiries undertaken after 1st January 2011. These are raised on a not-for-profit basis and will be used to fund the conservation and maintenance of the museum, which is a registered charity.

Research is carried out by Museum staff and experienced volunteers with considerable knowledge of the history of the Regiment. The charge for an enquiry from the general public will be £20 and is in line with the charges of most other military museums for similar undertakings. This figure is based on approximately one hour of research for relevant information and the preparation of a helpful and if possible informative response. If there is extensive material available you will be told in advance and there may be an additional charge.

Special rates may be applied to those who wish to initiate enquiries for commercial purposes and/or for financial gain – authors, media researchers and others. To avoid misunderstanding, such persons are requested to declare their interest at the outset.

Reproduction Costs

It is usually possible, within the constraints of copyright law, for individuals wanting copies of photographs or photocopies of documents to be provided with them, but for personal research use only.

A fee, including a handling charge, will normally be raised to provide copies of photographs and photocopies of documents. There is no set scale of fees as the charge will be dependent upon the nature of each task and the cost of providing it.
